Zaria Clash: 83 Detained Shiites Members Regain Freedom

No fewer than 83 suspects arrested during the Zaria clash between the Nigerian Army and the Shiites movement have been freed from detention by the Kaduna State police command. Among those released are 34 children and 49 women.

They are part of about 191 suspects that were being held for various offences, including obstruction of highways, possession of weapons and attacking security agents pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations which might lead to charges being filed at the State High Court or the Federal High court.

This is as spokesperson for Governor Nasiru El-Rufai, Samuel Aruwan, has disclosed that the State Security Council, resolved to ensure adequate security measures would be put in place across the state ahead of Maulud, Christmas and New Year festivities in the State.

Aruwan in a statement said that citizens were also advised to be law-abiding and report to security agencies, traditional and religious leaders and the government any threat to peace and stability of the state.

In this regards the governor’s spokesman also said that citizens whose properties or belongings were abandoned on the streets, including vehicles, motorcycles and other properties should retrieve them  upon identification and proof of ownership.
