The Federal Government has said that it did not recalled its envoys from South Africa over the xenophobic attacks but only summoned them for routine consultations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, on Monday said that the statement earlier issued by his ministry was a summon for routine consultations with the acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to South Africa and the Consul General in Johannesburg, over the xenophobic attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, in South Africa, which he noted remained a usual practice in the conduct of diplomacy.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to restate that the two senior diplomats have been invited for consultations after which they would return to their duty posts. They have, therefore, not been recalled as erroneously portrayed in the media.

“Much as the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the generality of Nigerians are deeply concerned about the xenophobic attacks, there are satisfactory indications that the South African authorities have taken firm measures to stem the attacks.

“As the Nigerian government continued to watch with keen interest, further developments, both countries are in discussion on this matter and are determined to put the unfortunate saga speedily behind them,” he stressed.
