Abuja – Federal lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Wednesday joined teachers in the country and world over  to celebrate the 2016 World Teachers Day with a call for a renewed priority that would bring about improved training and welfare packages for teachers in the country.

The focus of discussion at the commencement of Wednesday plenary also includes the need to come up with legislation that would prioritise the development of education through increased professionalism of teachers as well as encouragement of the younger generation to show interest in the teaching profession.

The debate was sequel to a suggestion from the chair by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, urging members to rub minds on challenges confronting the teaching profession in Nigeria, bearing in mind the presence of teachers who are currently members of the House.

Dogara in heralding the discussion threw the subject to Aishatu Jibril Dukku (PDP, Gombe), a teacher and a former minister of state for education under President Jonathan to lead the debate.
