The Board of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) on Tuesday announced the commencement of a World Cup break for its entire women league clubs with effect from May 20.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary of the League Board, Isaac Ajisafe, in Abuja.

Super Falcons, the African champions, is one of the team’s to fly Africa’s colours at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The statement said: “We wish to inform all women league clubs that the NWFL after due consultations decided to stop the women league temporarily.

“The break, which will commence from May 20, will be observed throughout the period of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It will resume after the Super Falcons returns to Nigeria,’’ it said.

“The decision is imperative so as to allow clubs, players, officials and other football-loving Nigerians to actively support the Falcons.

“They need our prayers now to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup, more so, most of the players playing in the league will feature for Nigeria at the World Cup,’’ the statement added.

It urged Nigerians to pray for the success of the team at the competition, as the girls would be determined to surpass their quarter-final record in the U.S. in 1999.

The Falcons has had six previous FIFA Women’s World Cup outings.
