A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Eti-Osa Constituency 2, Gbolahan Yishawu, has revealed his interest in becoming the next Speaker of the House.

In an interview with Daily Independent, the lawmaker disclosed that he is interested in being the Speaker of the House, adding that he will talk to his fellow lawmakers as well as the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to consider him for the position.

“By God’s grace, at the 8th Assembly, I am qualified to run for the office of the Speaker just like some of my colleagues.”

I want to run for that office and I wouldn’t mind if the leadership of the party and my colleagues find me worthy to represent their interest as the Speaker of the House.

“For me, in the 8th Assembly, we need people that are very creative and innovative. I don’t believe in the old order that this person has worked with the last administration, we don’t have to continue to do things the same way. I don’t have to tell you all about the 7th Assembly even old and new members of the Assembly agreed that it did not run optimally.

“I want to run the Assembly and move it from where Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji and his team have moved it. They have done a wonderful job, people believe that the House is the best in the country and the flagship of the state Houses of Assembly, but for me, we can do so much more for our people.

“For instance, all of us are supposed to have constituency offices, yes all of us have, but are they running optimally? Why are they not running optimally? I know how much I spend to run my constituency office personally; I know that if the House of Assembly can assist us to run the constituency offices, it would be better.

“These are some of the things we can do better, I want to ensure that sittings commence right on time and we can do things accordingly. Of course, we go for training, it would be continued.

“I also think that our aides should earn more to assist us deliver good governance to the people of Lagos State. The ones we have needed to be motivated and the new members can engage people of high standard.

“I pick my phone calls all the time; I should have an aide who can do that, who can speak for me on the phone and book appointments on my behalf. But I do this myself at the detriment of somebody’s job,” Yishawu said.
