Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, was hit by a flood on Sunday, leading to the death of at least eight people and the destruction of parts of the city’s zoo.

Many animals, including lions, bears and hippos escaped from the zoo and roamed the streets, reports said.

According to Civil.ge, a news agency funded by the EU and the UN, half of the zoo’s 600 animals were missing on Sunday, including crocodiles, fish and birds. Although some animals have been recaptured and others killed, many animals were still on the run.

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has asked residents to stay indoors while the animals are rounded up.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs also urged everyone to stay indoors but said in a statement that the situation was “under full control.”

Two employees of the zoo were among the fatalities.
