Governor Nyesom Wike on Friday constituted a judicial commission of inquiry saddled with the responsibilities of investigating the activities of the former governor, Rotimi Amaechi and how some of the state’s own assets were disposed off.

The commission which has Hon. Justice George Omereji as chairman has a standing order to probe into the sales of the 360MW of gas turbine at Afam, 150MW turbine at Omoku and 75MW at Elme by the past administration.

The responsibility of the Commission is to verify who bought the gas turbines, at what cost and the whereabouts of the proceeds from such sales.

Wike-and-Rotimi-AmaechiThe instrument setting up the Commission said it will also investigate the sales of the Olympia Hotel, ascertain the terms of the construction of the monorail project and the cost of the proposed Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte specialist Hospital, even when over US$39million dollars had been spent.

Governor Wike further charged the commission to ensure that it investigates the “total accrued sum of money from the mandatory monthly contribution of N1b by the Rivers state government into the Rivers State Reserve Fund,”, determine whether the disbursement of money from the Fund complied with the provisions of the Rivers State Reserve Fund Law No 2 of 2008.

The governor ordered the commission to see to it that appropriate recommendations were made to recover all sums of money unlawfully paid to the contractors of the Specialist hospital, sales of the Olympia hotel and the monorail.

Wike frowned that as much as N96billion was withdrawn from the state Reserve Funds without any recourse to the law establishing such funds, adding that measures must be devised to recover such money if it was unlawfully spent.

The governor who derived the power to establish the judicial commission from section 2 (1) of the commissions of inquiry law of Rivers State (cap. 30), said the commission is for “the investigation of the administration of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi” with respect to the above issues.

Other members of the commission include Dr Edith Chukwu, Monday Ekekenta, Rev Canon Alex Usifo and Elder Ignatius Piegbara as members. Mrs Florence Fiberesima is the secretary of the commission while Dr Zaccheaus Adango is the Counsel.

Amaechi had earlier lamented that Wike’s government has clearly set out to witch hunt him and his commissioners including aides.
