The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has again postponed the conduct of the legislative rerun elections in Rivers State which was initially slated for July 30.

Following the cancellation of the initial legislative election in the state due to violence, INEC had on June 20 after a meeting with relevant stakeholders, fixed June 30 as new date for the conclusion of the poll.

However, the commission in a statement signed by Mrs. Augusta Ogakwu , its Secretary, said the rerun poll was postponed for the second time due to reports of violence, maiming and fatalities which caused the initial postponement of the polls in March, though no new date has been fixed.

According to the statement, the electoral body said that, “as a responsible organisation and conscious of the violence, maiming and fatalities which accompanied the previous election in March as well as developments in the state since then, the commission cannot ignore such credible reports.

“In the circumstances, therefore, it is compelled to further postpone the rerun legislative elections in Rivers State as one of the principal conditions earlier stipulated for the return of the state for the conclusion of the election has, regrettably, not been met.

“This, the commission holds, is also a collective responsibility to be borne by all political actors irrespective of political positions and affiliations. If the goal of political contests is to serve the people, then there is no greater service than ensuring, at all costs, the preservation of the lives of the people whom such services would be rendered.”

INEC further justified the cancellation of the rerun, saying it has a responsibility to ensure that voters, electoral personnel, observers and other stakeholders are protected during the fresh election.

However, Dr. Austin Tam- George , the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, has called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency disband INEC under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Tam- George, in a statement issued shortly after the cancellation of the rerun election scheduled for July 30 said the state government and the people of the state were shocked by the collusion between INEC and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prevent the election from taking place.

According to him, the incompetence of INEC and the open partisanship of the electoral body was denying the state a full representation in the National Assembly.

“The government of Rivers State and people of Rivers State are shocked by the bare-faced collusion between INEC and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert democracy in the state”.

“It is completely unacceptable that Rivers State would continue to be denied full representation in the National Assembly due to the incompetence and malpractices orchestrated by INEC”.

“We call on the presidency and the National Assembly to act urgently in the national interest to disband INEC as presently constituted, for its incompetence and open partisanship.”

“We call on the international community to initiate and maintain diplomatic pressure on the federal government, which continues to frustrate the independence of INEC, and the evolution of democratic diversity in Nigeria”.

“The people of Rivers state will continue to resist and defeat the medieval authoritarianism of the APC” the statement said .

The Commissioner praised the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, for his courageous insistence that only free and fair elections would be acceptable the people of Rivers State.
