The Secretary General of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Taiwo Oriss, has given reasons why the country must take part in the forthcoming biennial conference in Mexico. He said that the need for Nigeria to be recognised globally and be supported by the International Golf Federation (IGF) were the reasons why NGF must attend the conference.

The conference, which will hold between September 18 and 19 in Cancum, Mexico is a congregation of all world golf federations.

“Nigeria cannot isolate itself from the international organisation, if the game must develop, NGF needs to be there to rally support for Nigeria,” he said. “If we can get the support of IGF, Nigeria will begin to get some of the benefits other African countries are enjoying in golf,” Oriss added.

He said that the conference would be an opportunity for the NGF to lobby for a change of the Rio Olympics qualification format. Nigeria did not meet the IGF standard, which was based on world ranking and champions of major tournaments. Nigeria’s number one player, Andrew Oche Odoh, is ranked 1, 741 in the world.

The IGF conference will also present Nigeria with the opportunity of lobbying for the office of the president of the African Golf Confederation, which is now open for grab. This is because the AGC President, Joe Malanji, just won a senatorial election in his country, Zambia and a new president would be elected. Oriss believes, “Nigeria’s participation in the conference could be an opportunity to make a statement in the scheme of things in the AGC politics.” Oriss said that, “There is also another position for the West African Zone, which Nigeria has the opportunity of grabbing too; but it can only be possible if we fraternise with the IGF, not staying away.”

However, the secretary reiterated fears that Nigeria may not be able to participate as the Federation was yet to get funds for the trip.Similarly, he assured, “We are hoping to get a sponsor for the trip. Otherwise, the Federation has no money as I speak there if no sponsor, it means we will not be there.”

The conference will be preceded by the World Amateur Team Championship holding in the same city. The women event will hold from September 12-17, while the men event tee off from September 20-24.
