Human rights activists have called on the President-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, to ensure that Nigeria remains as one peaceful and indivisible country after May 29 handover date.

Ebiakpo Barle, national president of Coalition of Niger Deltans for Justice (CONDJUD), in a telephone chat with our correspondent on Saturday said that the outgoing president accepted the results of the presidential poll in order to keep the country as one.

His words: “It is now left for Buhari to ensure that the peace and unity which the country is presently enjoying is nurtured and maintained by the incoming government, regardless of what occurred before, during and after the presidential poll.”

The CONDJUD leader urged Buhari to follow due process in the drive to clean up Nigeria of corruption and other social vices, saying that as a civilian head of state, it will be undemocratic for him to be dictatorial in his daily dealings.

Also speaking on the incoming government, Dr Mrs Grace Achum, an Abuja-based media consultant, said Buhari should resist the pressure not carry all regions in the country along in governance, irrespective of whether or not they voted for his party.

“The appointments into key political positions should be based on equal representation from all the six geo-political zones across the country” she said.
