We’ve Not Endorsed Lawan for Senate President -North-East Senators

As the lobby for principal offices in the Eighth Senate by senators-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues, the North-East caucus has dissociated itself from the purported choice of Senator Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), who is vying for the post of Senate President, stating that he is not the candidate of the zone.

The caucus, with 12 APC senators, on Friday May 1, 2015, disclosed that there was no candidate for the post yet.

Led by Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), who briefed newsmen in Abuja, the senators said Lawan could not have been the chosen candidate for the post of Senate President since the APC has not formally zoned it to the region.

The senators, including Goje, Isa Ahmed Gusau (Bauchi Central), Ali Ndume (Borno South), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe Central), Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako (Adamawa Central), Binta Garba Marshi (Adamawa North), Ahmed Abubakar (Adamawa South), Usman Bayero Nafada (Gombe North), Abubakar Jare (Borno North) and Suleiman Nazif (Bauchi North), said the caucus was still pleading with the leadership of the APC to officially zone the position to the North-East in view of their “peculiar circumstances.”

The senators’ statement was in response to claims that 17 senators from the zone had adopted Lawan as the candidate of the North-East on Thursday.
