West & Central Africa Clubs Championship To Boost Tourism In Akwa Ibom

As the 1st West Africa and Central Africa Golf Clubs Championship billed for Le-Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort Uyo from April 27 – May 2, 2016 gets underway the organisers have said it was another deliberate effort to boost golf tourism in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking to Independent exclusively on Thursday, Abel Edinomo, Secretary General of West Africa Amateur Golf Association (WAAGA), affirmed that Akwa Ibom State has a lot of tourism potential that could be driven through golf.

He said, “The West and Africa Clubs Championship was created to accelerate the evolution of golf development and its sustainability.
“It is also to increase the business of golf tourism in the sub-region and we have found Akwa Ibom State a suitable environment in Nigeria for the project.”

Speaking further he said, “It will also help to train a significant number of youths and golf course workers, especially green keepers for improved services and maintenance cost effectiveness in managing golf facilities, under the harsh sunny and heavy tropical rain weather of the regions condition.”

The Secretary also said one of the essences of the championship was towards building a solid and sustainable foundation for golf in the sub-regions revealed that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) was working round the clock to ensure the success of the tournament which would be annual.

Over 14 countries and about 50 clubs featuring over 250 players will converge for the tournament in the Akwa Ibom State capital.
