President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that his administration is ready to negotiate with the Boko Haram terror group to ensure the release of the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped from their secondary school over one year ago.

The President stated this in Paris, France, where he is presently meeting the French President, government officials and businessmen on a three-day working visit. Spokesman for the President, Femi Adesina, disclosed this on his Twitter  page on Tuesday, quoting Buhari as saying, “We are talking with Boko Haram over Chibok girls. But we need to ensure they are genuine leaders, then we negotiate.”

This disclosure is coming after many months of speculations and protests in many quarters. There have also been divergent views on how government should handle the matter.

Recently, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, on a visit to Nigeria, reportedly urged Buhari not to negotiate with Boko Haram.

The President also added that Nigeria and its allies in the ongoing fight against the terror group were winning the war: “It’s a matter of time, Boko Haram will finally be defeated, and driven out of the entire West African sub-region,” he said.
