Members of the Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) have said that the group is not a terrorist organization as peddled in some quarters, particularly by the Federal Government therefore resulting in the killings of its members.

Chief Isaac Ofoegbu, Bayelsa State zonal leader of the group, who visited the Daily Independent office in Port Harcourt weekend argued that MASSOB, like every other peaceful organization in the world was non-violent in its approach to actualizing its aims and objectives.

Ofoegbu said that “the federal government was just giving a dog a bad name in other to hang him”, stating that MASSOB has never been involved in any act of violent since its inception to have warranted the shooting of its members at a close range by security agencies.

“We condemn the killing of innocent members of MASSOB by the security agencies despite the fact that the people were armless, merely sensitizing the world on their plight. It is undemocratic for any government to direct the killing of its citizens for merely staging a non-violent protest on the street.

“We call on the federal government and President Mohammadu Buhari in particular to prevail on the security agencies to stop wasting the lives of innocent people and as a matter of remorse for the grave crime the government has committed against humanity, release all the detained MASSOB members they have arrested in Onitsha, Aba, Owerri and other parts of the country.

“As a non-violent group, MASSOB will continue to pursue its aims and objectives without any violence and there is no amount of intimidation and harassment that can stop our peaceful crusade”, he said.

The MASSOB zonal leader stated that all over Nigeria and the world at large, “there are various groups that are pursuing one thing or the other. We in MASSOB are saying that we are not well treated in the contraption called Nigeria, should that warrant the killing of our members?

“They should stop killing our members because we are not a terrorist organization. We are peaceful and we want our freedom. We are calling on President Buhari to urgently address this issue because we have the rights in our constitution for association and expression. They should stop hunting for our members, arresting, detaining and killing them”, Chief Ofoegbu said.
