ASABA – Ijaw leaders have called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government not to regard the people of the Niger Delta as enemies of Nigeria.

Comrade Sheriff Mulade, chairman of Kokodiagbene community, Delta State, said on Monday that the Ijaw people and the Niger Delta region have been the mainstay of Nigeria, “feeding” the nation for over 50 years.

He demanded that the Federal Government should feed the Niger Delta in return by improving on the development of the area and other initiatives such as the take-off of the Maritime University for peace to reign in the region.

The chairman pleaded with the Federal Government to create programmes that would bring development to the region and ease the pain and environmental degradation of the area.

According to him, tangible reasons have not been given for the cancellation of the Nigeria Maritime University and the reduction of the amnesty budget programme designed by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration.

He called on Buhari to personally investigate the alleged witch-hunting of Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, and the ethnic bias in the purported relocation of the Nigeria Maritime University.

Mulade assured the president that Ijaws and the people of the Niger Delta were behind him and would do everything possible to ensure peace in the region.

“The Ijaws are peace-loving people who are only demanding for their fundamental rights to development, environmental remediation, and equal political rights, and putting an end to marginalisation of the Niger Delta people,” Mulade said.
