We Are Surprised Odegbami Could Not Get Endorsement Of 5 Federations–Pinnick

By Tony Ezimakor Abuja

President of Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick was short of expressing shock that FIFA Presidential hopeful, Segun Odegbami could not summon the minimum signature of five football federations required for candidates to enter the race for football’s top job.

Odegbami on Monday ended his aspiration for FIFA Presidency in Cairo Headquarters of CAF as he could only garner Nigeria’s endorsement and had since blamed others but himself for the embarrassing outcome.

Speaking for the federation, Pinnick said he  thought Odegbami had reached out to other federations, saying that out of 129 FIFA affiliate football bodies, securing the endorsement of five football federations ought not pose a big challenge for a respected football icon like Odegbami.

“On the side of the federation, we are simply to nominate, thinking he would reach out to other federations. Because before now we thought he had got the other nominations; that ours would just be the icing on the cake. We never knew that he did not get the other nominations. Recall that before now  Odegbami had said that what he needed was the nomination of the NFF, and that he would get the other nominations and, we believed he could, given that he is well known in football circle”

Try as they  did, he said that the federation found that other federations had made their commitment to other candidates.

On that allegation by Odegbami that he (Pinnick) was arm twisted to dump him, The NFF President said that nobody could have done that, saying that he did his human extreme to get Odegbami on the ballot.

Journalists were even shocked to learn first hand that Odegbami could not make the trip to Cairo where fate of candidates was decided.

“As President of the federation, I did my  best and quote me, before God and man I went beyond human extreme, I was with him (Odegbami) on phone from Cairo every hour giving him update and information on how the process was going. We did our best giving the limited time and in the circumstance we find ourselves” he said.

He distanced himself on the issue of sabotage, pointing out that the federation at a point advised both aspirants Orji Uzor Kalu and Odegbami to come together, adding that ” there’s no way you chose Odegbami and leave Orji Uzor Kalu or chose Orji Uzor Kalu and leave Odegbami” , noting that both aspirants had made significant contributions to football development in the country.

Explaining reasons why the NFF endorsed Odegbami instead of the former Abia State Governor, who is believed to have the means to drive his campaign, Pinnick said that Odegbami substantially complied with the conditions set by NFF, including endorsement by the federal government.
