Lagos – Austin Jay Jay Okocha, former Super Eagles captain, has given a recipe on the way forward for the national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers beginning in October.
Nigeria was pooled alongside Cameroon Algeria and Zambia in Group B of the qualifiers, which has prompted many Nigerians to express pessimism on the chances of the country qualifying for the tournament.
But speaking in Lagos on Sunday, the former midfielder said that there was nothing to worry about over the supposedly group of death, urging the NFF to start early preparation and ensure that the coaches invite the right players.
“The group may look very tough and when you put that side by side with what we are going through in our football, you may have fears.
“But on the other hand, we have some good players scattered all over the world, including the local league. Whoever that will manage the team when the qualifiers start should not be sentimental.
“I have a strong feeling that with the right caliber of players, who are in form and hungry for success for the country, Nigeria will qualify ahead of the other countries.
“Technically, these other countries are not better than Nigeria, only that our football was and possible is still passing some challenges.”
He urge the NFF to start early in all areas including naming a coach for the team.
“NFF should settle this coaching issue and make logistics available for adequate preparation. I tell you the boys will get us the ticket, I am so sure of that,” he said.
