What can go for the greatest upset has been recorded in the ongoing US Open, as unheralded Italian and 43rd seed, Roberta Vinci, defeated world number one, Serena Williams 6-2 4-6 4-6 to set up a US Open final with fellow Italian,  Flevia Penneta, who crushed Romanian Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3

The Italian served out nervously for the biggest win of her career, taking the final point with a magnificent pick up off her toes. The Serena record slam chase was over.

Vinci has never been to grand slam final before let alone winning it, but the Italian put up a remarkable performance to deny Serena what would have been a memorable year

Vinci played a smart second set; she used a lot more variety and went to Serena’s forehand. Serena didn’t handle the situation very well, she didn’t adapt and made a couple of errors that she didn’t expect herself to make.

With this defeat, Serena had been denied the chance of being the only player since 1998 to win all the grand slam in one year.

Reacting after the match, Vinci said: “I’m sorry for the American people, for Serena, the Grand Slam, everything…but today is my day.

“I’m proud of myself, my fight and my game. I’d like to say thank you to my coach and my team – grazie!

“I will enjoy this moment today – and then tomorrow we will see.”
