Eight of the about 30 masked cultists who have been terrorizing the residents of Obumseli, Nwuga, Ogbolu, Abagana and Ijeh streets, at the Niger Bridge Head Approach, have been arrested and handed over to the Police Division in the area.                                                           The chairman of the community vigilance group, Mr. Ejike Onwa, disclosed this during the inauguration of the security outfit at the weekend by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbuanya.

According to Onwa, “Once it is 6.30pm you see people running to get inside their houses.

“This is because of fear of these cultists numbering about 30 that attack the people.

“It is because of these cultists that the five streets of Obumseli, Nwuga, Ogbolu, Abagana and Ijeh came together and formed a security outfit to fight them and it has been yielding dividends as eight of them were arrested and handed over to the police.”

Accompanied by his secretary, Mr. Okafor Henry, he added that the cultists attack the residents with guns, machetes, knives, charms, clubs and axe.

He also said that they

confessed being members of Red Carpet, Black Axe and Trigger Boys.

Contributing, an activist and member of Campaign for Democracy (CD), Igweze Benjamin, urged parents in the area to monitor their children and know the type of company they keep, adding that now that security outfit had been inaugurated by the DPO no cultist would be spared.                                                                                                                                                Also, the councilor representing the ward, Chike Arinze, disclosed that he was attacked by the cultists, adding, “but some of those that attacked me were arrested”.                                                                                   He warned that he would not listen to any parent that comes to him for the release of his child if caught in cultism.                                                                                                                                              Confirming the arrest of the masked cultists, the DPO said only four were handed over to him, adding that the four would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He warned the members of the newly inaugurated security outfit to avoid any act capable of dragging their image to ridicule, stressing that any arrest made should be handed over to the police immediately.                                                                                    “Your work is complimentary to the police. That you are a member of the security outfit does not make you a policeman.

“You do not have the right to detain and dont bring dead person or half dead person to me to carry, you will be held responsible for any illegal activity,” he warned.                                           The DPO expressed satisfaction that with the effort of the police and the vigilance outfit cultism, kidnapping and armed robbery which he said had been thriving before ne came in about three weeks now would be drastically reduced.
