A worshipper was shot dead as an argument broke out during a crowded church service in a Philadelphia suburb, in the U.S., reports say.

Hymns were being sung as the fracas erupted on Sunday morning at Keystone Fellowship Church in North Wales, Pennsylvania.

Robert Braxton, 27, a member of the congregation, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead in hospital.

The unidentified gunman has been questioned by police, but it is not clear if he will be charged.

Authorities said he was licensed to carry a concealed weapon, a semi-automatic pistol.

A worshipper told WPVI-TV she saw church ushers arguing with Mr Braxton at the 11am service, before one of the ushers shot him.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said he does not believe Mr Braxton was armed.

“There was a disturbance,” Mr Steele told a news conference. “It escalated into an altercation between two church members.”

The prosecutor said the gunman was also injured, but he was taken to hospital for treatment and released.

The Keystone Fellowship Church said in a statement: “Our hearts are deeply grieved over the tragic event that occurred Sunday morning.”

Braxton’s aunt told WPVI-TV she cannot understand how her nephew was shot dead in church.

“He’s a young man,” said Diana Walters. “He had his whole life ahead of him.”

Braxton’s father reportedly plays the bass guitar during services at the church.

Worshippers returned to the church hours after the shooting and gathered to pray.
