Use the NYSC to develop Nigerian youth

I write to draw the attention of the Nigerian Government to take a second look at the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Programme. We cannot continue to do the same thing in the old way and expect newresults.Every year, our educated youths are mobilized for the one- year compulsory national Youth Service to different parts of the country for one primary assignment or the other.

This trend has not been able to impact on our youth positively in most casesbecause after their service year some of them cannot find employment. This trend must stop. Instead of sending our youths to class room to teach and others to work on farms, government should seize the opportunity to retrain the youth in core skill-acquisition like welding, tailoring, auto- mechanics, catering, computer, engineering and etcetera. That will make them useful to themselves and the economy so that after their service year, they can be either self-employed or gainfully employed in any reputable institution.

It is very certain that an average youth in Nigeria can become the best in the world if the necessary support is given at the appropriate time. The National Youth Service Corp should be more of a technical training scheme instead of the old ways of deployment.
