The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Lagos mainland Local Government has concluded a seminar on the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Scheme.

Speaking at the event held at the Lagos Mainland Local Government Education Authority, Multi-purpose Hall, Yaba, the Education Secretary, Adetona Bisi Lawrence, urged community stakeholders to embrace the UBE Scheme as enshrined in Universal Basic Education Act 2004 and stressed that the failure to do so might attract stiff penalties as provided by the law.

Lawrence maintained that by embracing the Act, parents would be supporting their children by creating time and taking good care of them, adding that, “they should desist from marrying many wives and embrace family planning”.

One of the resource persons from Human Development Initiatives (HDI), Ajayi Samuel, told the audience that comprised of community stakeholders from Iwaya, Sabo, Oyingbo and Ebute-meta, among others, that UBE Act, 2004 covered early childhood education and development.

He urged the state government to give the Local Government Education Authority, saddled with overseeing and coordinating the primary and junior secondary education, necessary equipment to enhance the responsibility for the provision of student-friendly classrooms and field of sports as an integral part of education.

Another resource person, Sunday Alade, urged the community stakeholders to mobilise people in the support of government policies, programmes and activities.

He added: “As an agent of change they should act as mouthpiece of the people and monitor activities of political office holders and to call them to order when they work against community interest and values”.
