The United  States Embassy in Nigeria has condemned the orgy of violence that characterised the conduct of rerun election in Rivers State on Saturday March 19.

The statement by United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria in Abuja urged leadership of political parties to educate their members on how best to conduct themselves during elections.

“We call upon the leadership of Nigeria’s political parties to urge their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process,” the statement said.

The Embassy advised those who are not satisfied with the outcome of the election to use the appropriate legal means to seek redress instead of resorting to violence and killing of innocent people.  It also expressed regret over the target of electoral officers in the violence attack.

It could be recalled that the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) suspended the rerun national and state assembly’s elections in Rivers State as a result of violence in several parts of the state.

The election witnessed snatching of ballot boxes, alteration of election result and death of some people including a member of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The major political parties, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  and the  All  Progressives Congress (APC)  have been trading blames on the violence.
