In the face of dwindling oil revenues, the major source of earning for allocation to government, many state governments have been unable to pay workers and carry out other projects for want of funds from the federal government.

However, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, at the weekend said that reprieve was in sight as President Muhammadu Buhari would give a bailout to states to enable them pay salaries and settle other debts.

Speaking in Makurdi, Benue State, during a session with students and union leaders of Benue State University, Ortom stated that the President had agreed to throw the states a lifeline.

According to unofficial reports, a number of states have been hard-hit by the drying up of federal allocations, leading to liabilities and unpaid salary going back many months. The states include Benue, Osun, Enugu, Kaduna, Plateau and Imo.

Most states or their local governments are said to be owing between four to six months salaries of workers amounting to several billions of naira
