The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Uyo, chapter, Dr.  Anietie Brown has challenged the Nigerian private sector to increase support for research works in Nigerian Universities.

Arguing that this had the potentials to leapfrog the nation’s development, Dr.  Brown, who is also Dean of Student Affairs, stated this during an interactive session at his office regretted that there was hardly any company in the country that sets aside a percentage of its profits to promote research in Universities.

“It is when they do so that they can sit back and expect the outcome of such researches for the good of their companies.”

I think that the expected synergy will actually come when Nigeria’s industrial sector gets to realise that the actual success of that sector is predicated on the contributions of the Academia,” the Don said.

Speaking further he added, “The gown is really very far from the town. The town has allowed the University to be a microcosm of the society with little or no interaction”, he lamented.

Dr.  Brown stated that the need to promote synergy between the University and the larger society was the reason the University periodically organises public lectures relevant to the challenges of the society.
