UNILAG to award degrees, certificates to 10,600 Oyeniran Apata, Lagos

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that 10,600 graduates would receive degrees and certificates next week in the 2013/2014 convocation ceremony.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahaman Bello, during a world press conference to announce activities scheduled for the convocation ceremony on Friday, explained that the graduates were from the 12 faculties of the 52-year old university.
Giving a breakdown of the categories of graduates that will be presented with degrees and certificates at the convocation ceremony, from April 27 to 29, he said 5,836, representing about 55 per cent of the number, are in the graduate class, while another 4,756 would be given postgraduate diplomas, Doctor of Philosophy, and Masters degrees respectively.
“The School of Postgraduates Studies will be graduating a total of 103 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) while there are 4,330 with Masters degrees and 331 with postgraduate diplomas.
“I am proud to announce Korede Akinpelu of the Department of Chemical Engineering as the Best Graduating Student of this university with a cumulative grade points aggregate of 4.96. The second best is Sesan Shittu of the Department of Finance with a CGPA of 4.91,” the vice-chancellor said.
Other highlights of the ceremony include the convocation lecture, “Taking Advantage of a Depressing Nigerian Economy to Accelerate Socio-Economic Development,” on Monday, to be delivered by the former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, and convocation on Tuesday, followed by the second stream on Wednesday.
