The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that out of the 1,289,005 school-age children in Bauchi State, about 777,160 were out of school.

Malam Saleh Mohammed, State Education Consultant for Girls Education Project (GEP3), stated this Monday during a pre-planning meeting on enrollment drive by UNICEF, in collaboration with the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), at the Destination Hotel, Bauchi.

Mohammed, while presenting a paper titled, “Why Enrollment Drive Campaign and the Role of SBMCs in Promoting Enrollment of Girls in Schools, said, “According to the UNICEF global initiative on out-of-school children study in six northern states, 777,160 are out of school in Bauchi State,” and at the Junior Secondary School level in the state, 245,469 children, representing 65.4 per cent, were out of school.

Highlighting the figures, he said that 531,691 primary school children in the state were out of school, representing 58.2 per cent, and, of the primary school level children not in school, 74 per cent were expected to never enter school while 5 per cent were classified as drop-outs”.

“Community household mapping and listing research conducted by UNICEF in 2012/ 2013 reveals that socio-cultural attitudes towards education and girls as well as poverty account for why many children are out of school,” he said.
