As the war of words between Nigerian players and their Egyptian counterparts continues ahead of the March 25 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match, a warning has gone to Nigerian players to take the match seriously.

While baring his mind to Independent on the media hype the match is generating, Kadiri Ikhana, Coach of 3SC and former Eagles player, said it is high time Super Eagles players allowed their boots to do the talking instead of engaging the Pharaohs in the war of words.

“All I want to advise is that the players should take the match very serious. All these talks may not help on the match day,” he said.

“We have the players to overrun Egypt here and get a good result against them in their home, but the players have a huge role to play.

“There is extent to what a coach can do; he cannot enter into the pitch and play, so it is left for them to do the talking on the field of play because anything shot of seriousness will see us losing the match, God forbid,” he admonished.

Nigerian players and coaches, it will be recalled, have been engaging their Egyptian counterparts in verbal wars ahead of the match that will obviously determine so many things in the group, which has Tanzania and Chad as other countries.

Nigeria plays Egypt in Kaduna on March 25, with the return leg billed for Alexandria in four days time. The winner of the group automatically qualifies for the AFCON in Gabon in 2017.

Meanwhile, Hector Cuper, Head Coach of Pharaohs of Egypt, has said even though the Egyptian national team will give its all against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, he is not promising victory against the West African side come March 25 in Kaduna.

“I promise we’ll give everything in this match, but I cannot promise a win outright against Nigeria,” he said.
