The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) on Thursday in Maiduguri launched the distribution of 10,000 dignity kits to survivors of insurgency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

The UN agency also distributed 144 comprehensive reproductive health kits to medical facilities, including clinics in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps to respond to their reproductive health needs.

The kits include sanitary towel, soap, toothpaste, underwear, new clothes and infant, among others.

Presenting the items to Governor Kashim Shettima, Ms Fatma Samoura, UN Resident Coordinator, said the new round of distribution was with the support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Samoura, who lamented the poor access of women and girls in IDPs camps to reproductive health services, said UNFPA would provide essential reproductive health services to 4.5 million insurgency victims.

She said, “Many of us here today have easy access to reproductive health services but for a survivor of insurgency in an IDP camp, these needs are not easily met.

“The comprehensive reproductive health kits distributed today will provide contraceptive services for women of reproductive age, commodities for pre-natal, safe delivery and post-natal care for women.

“It will also provide comprehensive treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STI’s), including the prevention of HIV/AIDS and the clinical management of rape.”
