Umuezeala community has petitioned the Anambra and Imo state governments to urgently intervene in reconstructing their only access road to Rivers State from Anambra and Imo destroyed by activities of tippers.

The community said the activities of tipper drivers who excavate sand at the Atamiri River have left the road at Umuezeawala section dilapidated.

Addressing newsmen, Chairman of Umuezeala community, Dr. Donatus Iberi, lamented that the tipper drivers totaling over 80 are making use of the road on daily bases.

He added that their reckless driving has led to the death of over 45 persons through road accident.

“It is unfortunate that our  people have suffered untold hardship due to the activities of these tipper drivers. Most of the people that have died are aged people and school children.

“We are calling on the state and federal governments to come to our aid and save lives of our people,” he added.

Also speaking the traditional head of the community, Chief James Chukwudolue, noted that several representations have so far been made to government on the sorry state of the road, adding that the local government authority should take drastic actions in checkmating the reckless activities of the truck and tipper drivers.

He insisted that the Umuezeawala-Uli-Egbema road in Ihiala Local Government area of Anambra State needed urgent attention. The road which was reconstructed four years ago passes through Ihiala to Egbema town in Imo State and terminates in River State.

They cautioned drivers to be conscious of the aged people and children while driving to escape avoidable accidents.
