Why Umahi Slashed Ebony’s N80b Budget

The Ebonyi State Governor. Dave Umahi, has on Monday, 22, 2015,

re-presented the 2015 Appropriation Bill to the state House of

Assembly for failure of the immediate past government to

defend the bill before the House of Assembly.

The budget was reduced from N80 billion as presented by former Governor, Martin

Elechi, to about N75 billion because of the current harsh economy.

Presenting the bill to the 24-member house, Umahi explained that his

administration  decided to revise the bill having found out that the

appropriation bill was no longer in tone with the economic realities more

so as the past executive could not defend the bill.

The budget set aside N37.7 billion for recurrent expenditure while N44.8 billion went

for capital project.

The Works sector got the highest chunk with appropriation of N8 billion.

The governor pointed out that the government would engage in building of roads, flyovers, reticulatation of water and sundry projects meant to adress the infrastructure needs of the people.

He said the administration was challenged by huge inherited debts and

unpaid certificates generated by contractors.

Umahi had after the presentation said that all

appointees in the local government council of the state including the 13

caretaker committee chairmen of the councils would be sacked before the end

of this month.


While receiving Umahi at the chambers of the house, the Speaker,

Ogbonnaya Nwifuru, explained that they would pass the budget with the deserved

adoption moved by Valentine Okike and seconded by Odefa Odefa.
