John Downs , the owner of Downs’ Bait and Guns in Logan, Ohio, United States, says he suspected something was wrong with James Howard when he walked into his business to buy a gun.

However, Howard passed a background check, meaning he was clear to buy a weapon. But, as Downs later told a local TV station, “I just said, ‘You know what, bud, I have a really bad feeling about this. I just can’t sell you the gun.’”

Hocking County Sheriff, Lanny North, says Downs’ action may have saved a number of lives, possibly avoiding yet another campus shooting.

“From what I know of the circumstances, I believe he did prevent a mass shooting that was probably going to occur at (Ohio University) in Athens,” he said. He had an enormous amount of ammunition he was going to purchase, shotgun shells and 22-caliber rifle ammunition.”

But things almost got very ugly for Downs after he refused the sale. According to reports, Howard returned to the store but fled after Downs turned off the “Open” sign, told his customers to hide and loaded several weapons. He then called 911.

Howard was arrested at a nearby Wal-Mart buying survival gear and is being held on a $125,000 bond. His next court date is April 6, 2015.

Downs says he doesn’t consider himself a hero, but dozens of Ohio State students and parents of students have contacted him to say thank you.
