U-23 Eagles Jet Out For Senegal Cracker

Osimhen, Awoniyi, Okechukwu boost team

Barring any last minute changes, the U-23 Eagles will Wednesday depart Banjul, Gambia, where it has been camping for the past 10 days for Senegal where the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations will take place. Sirajo Hassan, secretary of the team revealed that the delegation made up of 23 players, 10 officials will depart the Banjul International Airport at about 11pm aboard Arik aircraft for the thirty minutes flight to Dakar.

The team is expected to play its last friendly game against the Gambian U-20 side, the Baby Scorpions, on Wednesday at 4pm (5.00pm Nigerian time), before departing. The team on arrival in Dakar will then leave for Mbour, venue of its first two Group B games. Meanwhile, Coach Samson Siasia has selected Chile U-17 World Cup highest goal scorer Victor Osihmen as a replacement for Granada of Spain striker, Isaac Success, who pulled out due to a late injury.

Also, the presence of Turkey-based defensive midfielder Azubuike Okechukwu who leads a list of three foreign professionals namely Liverpool’s Taiwo Awoniyi and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia’s Ajayi Junior boosted the Flourish Wellness Resort camp of the U-23 national team in the Gambia. The team will begin their quest to qualify for the Rio Olympics when they take on West African rivals Mali on Sunday at the Caroline Faye Stadium, in Mbour.
