Two British women are reportedly missing off the coast of Lloret de Mar in northeastern Spain.

The Spanish Coastguard said that it was looking for two women near the popular holiday destination 47 miles (75km) northeast of Barcelona.

Police were called around 4am and helicopters and divers are taking part in the search.

Local reports, according to Sky News, said that the women are British, aged 33 and 36, and part of a group of five women who were on the beach together overnight.

A spokesman for Spain’s Salvamento Marítimo search and rescue told Spanish news website The Local: “We sent out a rescue boat and scrambled two helicopters to the area to look for the two British women.

“It was very bad weather, the waves were big and the currents were powerful.

“We don’t know the circumstances of why these two decided to go for a swim except that they were with a group of other women who raised the alarm when they failed to come out of the water.”

A Civil Protection source in the resort reportedly told Catalonia Radio: “We are expecting the worst. The last time they were seen they were being swept out to sea and it is virtually impossible that they would have been able to reach the shore.

“The sea is like a washing machine.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm that two British nationals were reported missing in Lloret de Mar on 1 October.”
