Rivers State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has identified unity and peaceful coexistence of Nigerians as a panacea, for the nation’s sustainable development.

Immediate past chairman of the State Council of TUC, Comrade Chika Hyginus  Onuegbu, who stated  this in a welcome address at the opening ceremony of the 5th Triennial State Delegates’  Conference (SDC) of  the TUC, Rivers State Council in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the state needed peace now,  more than ever before, to attract investments to the state.

He said; “Each day, the actions of our leaders, chiefs, elders and youths   continue to scare investors away. Already , many multinational  companies , including those in the oil and gas sector have divested their assets in Rivers state, relocated their  offices to Lagos or Abuja or scaled down their operations in Rivers state .Even many  of  our Rivers elites do not have their major investments in  Rivers state

“It is disheartening to note that Rivers state is no longer the preferred investors’ destination in Nigeria in the oil and gas sector.  The performance of Rivers State on the World Bank Ease of Doing Business report is very abysmal.

“All these, may have been complicated by the recent imposition of new taxes on the struggling businesses and residents of the Rivers state by the state Government,” he added.

Commenting on his tenure as State chairman of TUC, which ended on Thursday and which spanned over two administrations of the state government, namely,  Hon Rotimi Chibuike Amechi  and Governor Nyesom Wike, Onuegbu  said  the Congress had  stable, peaceful and harmonious industrial relations with both governments.

Onuegbu said: “TUC, Rivers State, during my  tenure , redefined trade unionism in the state and elevated it to the status of a competitive brand .  My team, led a solid foundation on which hopefully, the coming administration will sustain and improve upon.”

In a key note address at the occasion, the state Governor, Nyesom Wike commended Onuegbu’s exemplary and visionary leadership of the state Council of the Congress, which contributed immensely in the promotion and sustenance of industrial harmony in the state.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Comrade Kenneth Kobani, the Governor reiterated government’s zero tolerance to criminality and other anti social vices which, he noted, had been scaring investors away from the state, in recent times.

He said: “Rivers State Government is committed to supporting Labour in the state. We are a worker–friendly government. Your (Onuegbu) leadership has succeeded in working together with government. And we will continue to tap from your fountain of knowledge , even though  you are   leaving office at a time our government is  assuming governance of the state.”
