Asaba  – There is no respite coming the way of residents of Asaba, Delta State, as tricycle operators have increased transport fares in the state capital.

The operators released the new fares amidst the growing frustration over high cost of goods and services in Asaba.

In the new price regime, the minimum fare to be paid by passengers for any distance is now N50 as against N30 and N40 previously paid for short distances while those considered as long distances have gone up from N100 to N150.

The introduction of tricycles in the state capital had virtually driven taxi drivers out of business as well as the urban transit bus system introduced by the state government, as the residents prefer tricycles.

Hillary Orji, a tricycle operator, attributed the increase to the growing hardship in the country and poor state of roads on many of the routes which have increased the cost of maintaining the tricycles.
