The oil giant, Total Group Nigeria, has partnered with the Ibafo community in the outskirt of Lagos to provide Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) to 500 households within the community.

The project, facilitated by Kasher Consulting Limited, featured community awareness, sensitising and teaching residents of the Lagos suburb on how to effectively hang and use their insecticide treated nets.

In the exercise, employees of Total Group in Nigeria, comprising the upstream and downstream sectors, distributed and supported the hanging of  LLINs in 500 households, as they handed out insecticides to about 3,250 beneficiaries, many of whom were children under 5 and pregnant women.

According to the General Manager, Total Down Stream, Mr. Alexis Vovk, the project which is part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility in its host community, is to create awareness among the local communities, employees and their families as well as all stakeholders on malaria control and prevention.

“The project, ‘Net it Out’, is to create awareness among local communities, employees and their families as well as all stakeholders in malaria control and prevention in Nigeria.

“We distributing the nets to the people within Ibafo are not about donation but about hanging the nets properly and sensitising the residents on the need to sleep under treated nets everyday as malaria is a killer disease,” Vovk said.

Corroborating Vovk, the Project Consultant, Dayo Oluwole, noted that it will be a thing of joy if Nigerians, especially Lagosians embraced the culture of sleeping under treated nets in order to win the fight against malaria.

Meanwhile, head of Ibafo Town, Baale Kayode Okunlola, commended the project and expressed thanks to the firm.

He said; “Given that malaria is an ever prevalent challenge in the community, we appreciate the efforts of the Total Group in Nigeria at combating malaria by providing treated nets to many households within our community.

“It is very exciting to see that the firm is supporting our community in a significant way by helping a lot of poor families to prevent the spread of malaria in their homes.

“In addition to providing the nets at no cost, they have also provided labour to hang the nets so the families can start using it immediately.

“We will continue to pledge our support for the company as they keep   demonstrating their support for our people.”
