Texas Track & Field signed 19 recruits during the fall signing period and on Wednesday the Longhorns added the top jumper from Jamaica to the men’s class.

The spring signing period began well for the Texas Longhorns with Obrien Wasome signing his National Letter of Intent with The University of Texas on Wednesday morning. Wasome is ranked No. 1 in both the triple jump and long jump in Jamaica and recently broke the Jamaica Boys Class 1 record in the triple.

“I am ecstatic that Obrien has chosen to join the Longhorn family,” said Assistant Coach Kareem Streete-Thompson. “He will be an integral part of the jumps group and should make an impact at the conference and national level right away. He has improved greatly over the last few years and is just starting to realize his world class potential.”

Wasome attends Jamaica College, the same high school as future teammate Nick Phynn. Wasome broke a meet record at the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships in March with his mark of 16.39 meters (53-9.25) into a headwind. That mark also is a Jamaica Boys Class 1 record. Wasome also won the long jump at that meet with a leap of 7.50 meters (24-7.25). He jumped a wind-aided 7.74 meters (25-4.75) during the prelims and has a wind-legal personal best of 7.71.

Wasome joins an already impressive signing class for the Longhorns.

During the fall period, Head Coach Mario Sategna and his staff signed 19 recruits with another women’s basketball signee expected to join the track & field team after basketball season next year. Wasome is the 12th signee for the men’s team with one already enrolled at Texas this semester. With the addition of Wasome, the 12 signees in the men’s class combine to rank in the top 10 in a total of events.
