THE POLICE in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have arrested a three-man Nigerian syndicate of internet fraudsters targetting US bank accounts, the Interior Ministry has said.

According to a statement made available to the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the three were caught following a tip-off from the police in California about a cyber-criminal gang based in the UAE.

The Nigerians reportedly targetted individuals and institutions in the United States by hacking their emails and accounts to steal private documents and details.

According to the statement, the police raided the suspects’ apartments in the Emirate of Ajman, where they found a list of more than five million electronic bank accounts, which further implicated them.

The syndicate is said to be led by a 24-year-old man, while his friends are both 26. They reportedly entered the UAE as tourists, according to the statement.

Cybercrimes are punishable by imprisonment and fines of up to two million dirhams ($545 million) in the UAE.
