The current spate of terrorism playing out in the country is the fallout of politicians who lost control of the machinery of violence they unleashed to promote their personal interests.

This was the position taken by Mrs. Funmi Falana, a human rights activist at a public lecture and flag off of ‘Strategies to Combat terrorism and Foster National Peace’, organised by Universal Chaplain Corps and Rescue Mission, Lagos State chapter at the Saint Anthony’s Suites and Events               Centre, Idimu, Lagos.

She also warned that allowing selfish interests override the corporate needs of the country would further plunge the nation into crisis and urged Nigerians to allow the overall interest of the nation thrive.

Mrs. Falana said that the only way the country will overcome the insecurity challenges is for governments at all levels to see the spate of insecurity as a national issue and enlighten and sensitise the masses on the issue.

“Fighting terrorists alone is like cutting a branch of it but to fight terrorism is to uproot it. Therefore, education is very important,” she said.

Falana also called on Nigerians to be more tolerant of each other as it is the only way to achieve national peace.

“With tolerance, co-existence, understanding the heterogeneous society of Nigeria and tolerate each other, Nigeria will not break.

“Absence of tolerance will put the nation into endless enmity. National unity is being threatened with ethnicity, tribalism, fanaticism, religious intolerance, ethnic cleansing are causing problem to the unity of the country,” she noted.

The human rights activist also canvassed for the inclusion of a subject on peace and national orientation in the educational curriculum for future generation, as a way of avoiding indoctrinating young children with negative ideas.
