Lagos – Melissa Ifidzen, the champion of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship, is in need of sponsorship deal worth N45 million ($150,000) to prosecute her professional career programme.
The 18-year-old said on a Lagos Television Sports programme monitored on Wednesday that her ambition would be getting to the peak of the game saying Serena Williams is her role model, just as she is dreaming of Wimbledon title.
“I want to get to the top three in the world tennis and I also to want to be playing like Serena Williams win the Wimbledon,” she said.
Melissa’s manager and father (Mr. Ifidzen) appealed to corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to take up the challenge of sponsoring her to realise her career dream.
On a passionate note Ifidzen said, “The challenge we have now is money; we need at least N45 million ($150, 000) for a year to train her properly.”
Part of the funds according to the manager would entail: “The coach would have to be paid and she would need to be free from me and attend competitions on her own.”
On why she dumped Russia to represent Nigeria she said, “Nigeria is my country, I love Nigeria,” hence she was in the last African Games for Nigeria.
Melissa now Nigerian number one, is the defending champion of the CBN Open which she recently defended successfully by beating 2015 top seed, Christy Agugbom 6-3, 6-2 to win the star prize of N700, 000 in the singles.
She also paired Sarah Adegoke to win the women’s Doubles trophy, beating the pair of Christy Agugbom (her women’s Singles victim) and Blessing Samuel 6-0, 6-2.
