Power lifter, Latifat Tijani, have won Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing Rio Paralympics in the women’s 45kg Power lifting event.

Tijani who won a silver medal, entered the competition at 101, while other competitors attempted below 100.

The Nigerian lifter made a bright start, lifting 101 to smash the earlier existing Paralympics record, which was later short-lived as China’s Dandan Hu set a new one of 102.

A keen contest ensued between Tijani and Hu. But it was the Chinese that had the last laugh winning gold in style; setting a new World and Paralympics record with 108.0 to finish tops.

Great Britain’s Zoe Newson finished behind Tijani to win bronze.

Kudos Tijani. This is a great one for Naija especially at such trying times in our economic and social history. To our great God be all the glory – Amen.
