Liverpool FC have signed Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi impressed with Nigeria’s under-17s and under-20s and has now been snapped up by Liverpool.

After representing Nigeria at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup this year, a number of clubs from around Europe were said to be impressed with his performances despite a lacklustre showing from the team as a whole.

Swedish side, Kalmar, believed they had a deal tied down which meant Awoniyi would move to the Swedish side on the day of his 18th birthday, only for Fifa to step in and deny the claims as a result of attempting to protect trafficking of players from across the globe to European clubs.

The striker previously told supersport.com in an exclusive chat in July that he would leave for a European club in August once he turned 18.

Awoniyi has joined Liverpool FC but will immediately go out on loan to FSV Frankfurt on a season-long loan after failing to acquire a work permit.

Awoniyi has been speaking on his move to Liverpool.

He insists he has joined the “biggest football club in the world” in his first interview with the club’s official website, www.liverpoolfc.com.

“This is the biggest club in the world and I’m privileged to be here.

“I’ll try to develop myself very well so that when I come back to Liverpool I’ll be able to add value to the team.

“When I’m in the red shirt, I will always give my very best to make the fans happy,” he said.

Awoniyi striker is a regular for Nigeria’s youth teams and currently represents their Under-23 side, who are aiming to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games.

He has also played at the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups and earned a call-up for the senior Nigeria squad in 2013.
