The Delta State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has told Delta governor-elect Ifeanyi Okowa to tackle the decay in sporting facilities in the state.

SWAN made the call in a communiqué on Wednesday in Warri at the end of its congress.

The communiqué was signed by the association’s Chairman, Michael Okeogwu, and six members of the body’s executive.

While congratulating the governor-elect, SWAN noted that the heavy downpour on April 25, led to the flooding of the Warri Stadium.

It said, however, that the flooding resulted to the postponement of the match between Warri Wolves and Heartland FC, describing the development as an embarrassment.

“To avoid such occurrence and the embarrassment, the Warri Stadium should be put in order and the Asaba Stadium be completed.

“It will also be recalled that the same flood problem denied Delta State the hosting right of the FIFA U-17 Championship in 2009,’’ SWANsaid.

The association frowned at the affairs at the state-owned football clubs, urging the Delta State Football Association to brace up.

SWAN also called on Okowa to revive grassroots sports and the state’s sports festival to engage youths.

It urged the incoming administration to recognise the role of SWAN in sports development.

The body urged Okowa to seek its advice in the appointment of media officers into sports associations.
