Rotimi Akinwumi
Abuja – The immediate past National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ali Modu-Sheriff has been urged to respect party supremacy and stop his persistent war against the party following his removal from office by the National Convention of the party held on May 21.

The admonition came from the former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus in a press statement issued yesterday (Friday) .

Modu-Sheriff has refused to accept his removal from office of the PDP Chairman by the convention and has continued to lead a faction of the party with support from former National Secretary, Prof Wale Oladipo and former National Auditor, Adewole Adeyanju.

Secondus who worked with Modu-Sheriff as his Deputy said the ongoing war by Modu-Sheriff against the party will not augur well for his (Modu-Sheriff) reputation as a politician as well as for the party which he noted will be smeared.

He insisted that the convention which Modu-Sheriff is fighting against was properly convened in accordance with the party constitution, as he noted further that the way the convention was conducted did not in anyway breach the order of the court which barred the PDP from holding an elective convention.

Secondus noted further that the absence of Modu-Sheriff at the convention does not invalidate the convention as the former Chairman has continued to claim, as he insisted that there has been a precedent in the party on such.
“May I reiterate that the constitution of our party is very clear on the processes that leads to the convening of a National Convention and the powers and functions of that convention.

“The National Executive Committee convenes a National Convention and the National Chairman presides and in his absence (For whatever reason) the Deputy National Chairman presides. There is a precedent to this during  the 2011 National Convention of our party where the Deputy Chairman presided over the convention.

“The constitution of our party does not stipulate that the National Chairman must instruct the Deputy National chairman to preside at the convention before the Deputy National Chairman can do so.

“The decisions taken at the 2016 convention did not contravene any court order, rather it applied the spirit and the letter of the constitution to resolve a contentious situation regarding tenure of officers in the party.
“Yes, the National Convention as the Supreme Organ of the party can take far reaching decisions including dissolving the party itself.

“I urge our former National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff and all other officers whose personal interests maybe hurt by this inevitable outcome, to accept it in good faith in the larger interest of the party. Let us all sacrifice for the PDP” he said.

The former PDP Deputy National Chairman noted that it will be wrong for the PDP to rob itself of the opportunity to restructure and place itself as the alternate party to Nigerians in view of the way the current government is handling the economy with people complaining.

He stated “at a time like this that the nation is in dire need of an alternative leadership, every patriotic PDP member should support every legitimate initiative that would put our party in good stead as a credible alternative for Nigerians.

“This is the expectation of Nigerians and it is for the realization of this national interest that we fully supported the decision of the National Convention.
