…Says APC Planning To Rig FCT Polls
Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday urged the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to wake up to the business of providing leadership to the nation rather than continually blaming it (PDP) for the inability of the government to meet the expectations of the nation.
Speaking at the inauguration of the four special committees for the National Convention of the party slated to hold in Port Harcourt, River State on May 21, Ali Modu-Sheriff, the National Chairman of PDP, said the party sympatised with Nigerians with the current hardships being experienced in the country, as he said the excuse of persistent blaming of PDP by the APC government is wrong.
Modu Sheriff charged the APC-led Federal Government to concentrate on providing solutions to the myriad of problems confronting the country rather than perpetually blaming the PDP for the failure of government.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday held the Peoples Democratic Party’s 16-year reign responsible for the nation’s prevailing economic woes as he said the PDP while in power failed to save for the rainy day.
“In the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meagre resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day,” the President said at a reception for a delegation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), led by Dr. Bernard Aliyu, its President, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“We showed a lot of indiscipline in managing our economy, and that is why we are where we are today,” he said in blaming the past administration of the PDP.
President Buhari in his presentation to the ICAO delegation explained that the country witnessed a decline in the quality of infrastructure development in the last 16 years in spite of the boom in oil prices, adding that even the First Republic administration with its meagre resources achieved much more.
But Senator Sheriff said the PDP shares in the pains Nigerians are going through in the hands of the APC- led government, noting that with what has happened in the last almost one year of the APC government, Nigerians now have an opportunity to compare the performance of the two parties.
“The leadership of the party shares the pains of Nigerians after one year in office of the APC. Nigerians now have an opportunity to compare the PDP and the APC and Nigerians are the ultimate judges. Instead of APC providing solution, the APC is blaming PDP for lack of petrol in Nigeria.
“I would like to advise the leaders of APC to stop blaming the PDP. We are now in opposition, repositioning the party to show Nigerians that we can do better,” he said.
Speaking on the Area Councils Elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) slated for this weekend, the PDP Chairman also accused the APC of planning to rig the election using a state governor who has a big link with the FCT.
He said the party had credible intelligence indicating that the APC was mobilising its governors from other states to come to Abuja to compromise the council elections, warning that PDP would not allow its votes to be appropriated by any party.
“I have heard from reliable sources that governors of APC who are not resident of FCT want to come to the FCT for the election on Saturday.
“We will not allow anybody to rig us out. If they bring one governor, we will also bring in one governor. If they bring one former governors we will also bring in one former governor.
“We will not be part of any violence but we will protect our votes. Our votes must be counted and winners must be announced. There should be no inconclusive elections in the FCT,” he said.
Speaking on the committees, the chairman charged members of the committee to take their responsibility seriously, adding that the party was being repositioned to take on the challenges of the next elections.
He promised that the leaders that would emerge from the forthcoming congresses and conventions would be those that would be elected by the delegates and would not be selected by other forces.
“Today we will inaugurate four committees to strengthen our party. We are going to conduct convention and congresses and we will allow Nigerians to choose their leaders. Because our party is a large party, we may have made mistakes. Some people may have been omitted. We will take care of that in the future.
“I will like to beg our members that this party is for you. Every member has the right to demand what is going on but in doing so, our constitution must be respected. No party is run on the pages of newspapers. I want to say that this party will never be owned by one person. It belongs to all Nigerians,” he said.
Speaking after the inauguration, , Nyesom Wike, the chairman of Convention Committee of the party and governor of Rivers State,  promised that his committee would be impartial in the discharge of its duties.
“We will not be bias. We will carry Nigerians along. We will be as transparent as possible. We will give a result that is acceptable to the majority of the people. We are ready to carry everybody along. You will not be disappointed,” he stated.
“We want to assure you that we will put in our best to ensure the success of the forthcoming convention. I want to call on all members of the party to co-operate with members of the committee.
“We must work together, we must stop suspecting ourselves. It is not going to be easy for us to take over in 2019 but with commitment and God on our side, we will succeed,” he added.
