The leader of Dutsen-Reme women stone crushers in Bakori Local Government area of Katsina State, Binta Ibrahim, has solicited increased government support for the development of their business.

Ibrahim made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bakori.

She said the only crusher machine supported by World Bank in the community was grounded for over a year and efforts to resuscitate it through joint efforts failed, forcing them to now use manual system.

She said about N1.6 million was needed to repair the machine.

She said the business had attracted public patronage and made them to now compete with men because of the gains.

Ibrahim explained that the association started with 40 members but now has no fewer than 170 women.

She said more women were joining the stone crushing business because of the proceeds from it and other financial gains in the community.

While commending the wife of Katsina State Governor, Hajia Fatima Shema, over her support and visit to the site, Ibrahim called for construction of shades and toilets within the premises.

According to her, the facilities, when constructed, will provide environment conducive for the business and more capital support.

She said women had a lot to contribute to the development of the society and urged men to recognise the importance as provided within the laws.

The women leader explained that most of her members lost their husbands, leaving them with defendants.

She said they resorted to stone crushing business for the upkeep of their children and dependants.
