Ughelli – The Unuevworo of Ekpan community, Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, High Chief Newton Agbofodoh was yesterday brutalized by men of the State CIB, Nigerian Police, Army and some unknown thugs before he was whisked away to unknown destination.

An eyewitness told Independent that some unknown policemen in company of soldiers and thugs stormed the residence of the traditional ruler of Ekpan community, High Chief Agbofodoh at about 3.50pm without any formal invitation, beat him up and forcefully took him away to an unknown destination.

The arrest of the traditional ruler led to a state of confusion in the community that has been going through series of crisis before now as women and youths immediately stormed the streets of Ekpan in protest against what they described as unlawful arrest of their traditional ruler.

One of the protesting youths, Mr. Esegbona Okonana who spoke with Independent, called on the state government to intervene and release their traditional ruler, as he was not a fighter or part of the warring faction but a father of all in the community.

“This is oppressive and humiliating and a disrespect to the traditional stool of the Uvwie Kingdom. Incessant arrest of a traditional ruler without formal invitation must stop and Chief Newton must be released to go about his lawful assignment of maintaining peace in Ekpan community, he added.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Warri Area Command, while confirming the arrest, said High Chief Newton Agbofodoh was arrested by men of the state CIB who came with soldiers and police over murder related charges, saying that youths never molested him.
