The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR), have tasked the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to place more emphasis and interest on the Nigerian education system, the fate of the rail transport industry with a view to furthering the on-going asset rehabilitation and modernization of the industry.

SSANU President, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, in his agenda setting for Buhari said the union promised its total support for the incoming administration if it put interest in the education sector and improve on areas where progress has been made by its predecessor.

He said:  “SSANU is ready and willing to cooperate with the new administration of General Buhari in the interest of the Nigerian Educational system.

“The new administration, while reviewing and making sectoral reforms, must take particular interest in the educational sector, with a view to improving in areas where progress have been made, while correcting areas of defect in the system.”, he added

He described this as a clear demonstration of collective desire and interest in project Nigeria through democracy, rule of law and social justice.

“For once Nigeria and Nigerians have proved those doubting Thomases who believed that Nigeria and Nigerians would not remain one and united beyond the 2015 general election wrong”, he said

Also, the President General of the NUR, Comrade Raphael B. Okoro, who said this in Lagos, expressed optimism that Nigerian Railway development would take a new and improved turn under the administration of General Buhari.

He said: “Considering his unbending patriotism and quest for national development, I am confident and hopeful that Nigerian Railway will fair considerably better under the administration of General Buhari”.

‘’What it takes to take Nigeria to higher level of national development and stronger integration is a functional and effective rail transport system.  I strongly believe that what determines the extent a country like Nigeria can go in terms of development is its commitment to attaining rail infrastructural proficiency”, he added.

Okoro, who lamented the deplorable conditions of the nation’s railway assets nationwide, implored the President-elect to come to the aid of Nigerian Railway workers who he described as workers most poorly remunerated.
