The Association of Sports Veterans has asked President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to appoint a technocrat as Sports Minister on the premise that this was the only way to halt the slide in the sector.

President of the body, Jonathan Ogufere, a former member of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and past president of the West African Football Union (WAFU), said, such a move would arrest the present slide in the sector.

Ogufere said that the ministry of sports in the past had been used by past administrations as a dumping ground.

“This development accounts for the decline of sports over the years,” he said, pointing out that the failure of past governments to fully appreciate the crucial role which sports was expected to play in nation building was why they failed to give the sector quality leadership.

“Sports should be recognised as a veritable goldmine both for the country and its youth which requires administrative leadership comparable to most corporate or commercial setups.

“With the potentials which Nigeria have and considering the strides taken over forty decades ago, Nigeria ought to be in the elite class in the world of sports like Boxing, Athletics, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Football, Table Tennis and Swimming”.

The Veterans posited that aside from the office of Minister, there should also be a Special Adviser to the President on Sports and this should be someone with wealth of knowledge and experience in Sports Development.

Other speakers on the day, contributed to the debate on the need to revamp our sports given the socio political importance of sports in the development of the youth worldwide.
